John Kieffer

John has 25 years of experience in arts management, programming, audience development and cultural policy. Prior to joining AEA in 2005, John was Director of Performing Arts and Head of Music for the British Council where he introduced major changes in the form and content of the music program. The Council’s weekly music radio show, the Selector, won a Gold Sony award in 2005.
He began his career as a live music promoter and arts festival programmer. He then worked for the arts & disability charity Shape, Greater London Arts and the London Docklands Development Corporation, establishing a visual arts program. In 1992 he was appointed as Director of Arts for London Arts Board and from 1998-99, he worked as a consultant for the Arts Foundation, Artangel, the Media Trust’s Community Channel, and the Kings Cross Partnership.
He is a board member of Artangel, Artsadmin and the BBC Fame Academy Bursary, and serves on the steering committee of the Music Manifesto and the government’s Creative Exports advisory group. He has lectured on international cultural policy at City University and the Sorbonne.
