The Tyne and Wear Museums and Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives are two of the leading regional museums in the United Kingdom.  AEA was commissioned in 2005 to evaluate the social impact of the Museums’ programs on target audiences and to recommend ways to enhance the impact in the future. 

AEA conducted an extensive literature review of the social impact of museums and cultural institutions; interviewed staff and representatives of the museums and their partner organizations; conducted focus groups with program participants; generated a logic model to assess program impacts, and developed recommendations for increasing impact.

The museums used AEA’s report to guide internal planning and, in the case of Tyne and Wear, to share the results of the assessment with the national museum community.
