Isabella Stewart Gardner

From 2003 – 2005, AEA worked with the museum’s board and senior management on a strategic plan for the expansion of the museum to accommodate contemporary visitor expectations and growing visitor numbers while respecting the rich history and ambience of the museum, along with the clearly articulated intentions of the founder. The 60,000 square foot expansion, designed by Renzo Piano, is scheduled to open in 2010 and features:

  • A new entrance and visitor orientation area
  • An acoustically superior, flexible-use performance hall
  • Dedicated Special Exhibition Gallery
  • Studio-classrooms for the museum’s education and family programs
  • State-of-the-art conservation labs
  • Accommodations and work-space for artists-in-residence
  • An on-site greenhouse, fully visible to the public from Evans Way
  • More garden space accessible to visitors
  • A new Café and Terrace
  • A new Museum Shop
  • Administrative offices
